Alisdair MacTavish was born to a woman in the MacEachern clan in Northern Scotland, a family of strong Gruagachan traditions. Her husband was a MacTavish clansman, but during his apprenticeship he found out that his father's identity was a mystery. Because of his known background, he was trained at MacGruagach covenant. During his apprenticeship, his elders were mystified to discover he could only change into a falcon. The question was put to Domnhull Beg, a Bonisagus and the only non-Gruagach at the covenant. After extensive correspondence outside the tribunal (including Guy of Bern and John Austhwaite at Londinium), he theorized that Alasdair was a Bjornaer. Gingerly, he discovered from his mother that his father was a German magus she had encountered and never seen again. With this new knowledge, Alasdair passed his gauntlet after discovering a lesser shape, that of an otter.
Although he was a full magus, he felt like an outsider even in his adopted covenant. Furthermore, if his extended family discovered the truth about his origins, he was feared the consequences to him and his mother. Because of his pater's connections to the south and an invitation to study at Corona Montis (part of a plot devised by the scheming magus Superbus), he resolved to visit Cumbria. But the machinations of Superbus caught up with him at Horsingas covenant, where he met the magi a bit sooner than planned (see the story Neighbors to the North).
